Deckhand Nate discusses his recent career change with AYC Superyacht Recruitment and his new position as the deckhand on a world cruising yacht after launching into the yachting industry through the Galileo Maritime Academy Superyacht Deckhand Course in Phuket, Thailand.
As customer service representative for an Electronics company, Nate yearned to be outdoors and exploring the world. As young, fit and enthusiastic explorer he focused his skills around personal training and fitness. After resigning from his desk job, Nate eagerly accepted a role on the Carnival Cruise Ship Freedom as the Personal trainer. His onboard fitness programs focused on Weight loss, muscular gain and sports injury rehabilitation.
The professional approach and attitude required to work with cruise ship guests provided Nate with the opportunity to refine his customer service skills and then moved into a Concierge role onboard the Celebrity Cruise Ships including the 317m ‘Celebrity Reflection’ that carries 3,046 passengers .
The exposure to the cruise ship industry offered a taste to a career at sea and the adventurous aspects, benefits and lifestyle. The superyacht industry was a logical progression that can reward crew with a progressive career with financial benefits. Nate selected Galileo Maritime Academy in Phuket, Thailand to provide him the education and introductory skills required to land his first yachting position.
The Superyacht Deckhand course at Galileo is designed to provide the student with skills necessary to become a confident, competent and qualified superyacht deckhand over the 9 ½ days. Students shall learn all aspects of working in the industry including real life experience onboard a superyacht assisting with washdowns, polishing, maintenance and interior cleaning. Galileo Maritime Academy is the only MCA accredited maritime academy in the Asia Pacific region.
I have done various courses in the past, and I have never experienced the level of care and effort delivered in the way that we have received on this course. To add-up, the organization of things was incredible, we received so much knowledge and practical experience, over all experience was amazing! Upon completion of the course students are encouraged to contact and apply for positions with Crew agents, Nates enthusiasm, attitude and approach to this process grabbed the attention of the Director Stephen Crone who then sought to assist Nate into a position where he can thrive and develop the skills necessary to build his career path.
